چکیده

Numerical data structures for positive dimensional solution sets of polynomial systems are sets of generic points cut out by random planes of complementary dimension. We may represent the linear spaces defined by those planes either by explicit linear equations or in parametric form. These descriptions are respectively called extrinsic and intrinsic representations. While intrinsic representations lower the cost of the linear algebra operations, we observe worse condition numbers. In this paper we describe the local adaptation of intrinsic coordinates to improve the numerical conditioning of sampling algebraic sets. Local intrinsic coordinates also lead to a better stepsize control. We illustrate our results with Maple experiments and computations with PHCpack on some benchmark polynomial systems. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification. Primary 65H10. Secondary 14Q99, 68W30.

An intrinsic homotopy for intersecting algebraic varieties

Recently we developed a diagonal homotopy method to compute a numerical representation of all positive dimensional components in the intersection of two irreducible algebraic sets. In this paper, we rewrite this diagonal homotopy in intrinsic coordinates, which reduces the number of variables, typically in half. This has the potential to save a significant amount of computation, especially in t...

Witt rings of quadratically presentable fields

This paper introduces an approach to the axiomatic theory of quadratic forms based on {tmem{presentable}} partially ordered sets, that is partially ordered sets subject to additional conditions which amount to a strong form of local presentability. It turns out that the classical notion of the Witt ring of symmetric bilinear forms over a field makes sense in the context of {tmem{quadratically p...

Geometric Homogeneity and Stabilization

We present a consistent, geometric notion of homogeneity, for vector elds (diierential equations and control systems), functions, diierential forms and endomorphisms. The fundamental observation is that homogeneity is an intrinsic, geometric property. Accordingly, a coordinate-free characterization is given, and shown to yield the desired/expected results. This also addresses: \When do there ex...

Simulation of the Raman spectra of CO₂: bridging the gap between algebraic models and experimental spectra.

The carbon dioxide Raman spectrum is simulated within an algebraic approach based on curvilinear coordinates in a local representation. The two main advantages of the present algebraic approach are a possible connection with configuration space and the correct description of systems with either local or normal mode character. The system Hamiltonian and polarizability tensor are expanded in term...

On the Local Connectivity Number of Stationary Random Closed Sets

Random closed sets (RACS) in the d–dimensional Euclidean space are considered, whose realizations belong to the extended convex ring. A family of nonparametric estimators is investigated for the simultaneous estimation of the vector of all specific Minkowski functionals (or, equivalently, the specific intrinsic volumes) of stationary RACS. The construction of these estimators is based on a repr...
